- Brainmade: An entirely original alter not directly based on a source.
- Caretaker: An alter whose purpose is to care for specific other members of the system on a regular basis.
- Dormant: No longer active, but may "wake up" again as needed.
- Fictive: An alter based in whole or in part on a fictional character.
- Gatekeeper: An alter whose purpose is to control switching, keep tabs on other members, and generally keep the system in order.
- ____ Holder: An alter whose purpose is to contain debilitating or stigmatizing symptoms or emotions.
- Little: A child alter roughly around or under the age of 10.
- Persecutor: A sort of misguided protector who can act harmfully, either toward fellow members or those outside the system.
- Protector: An umbrella term for many alters, who may step in to absorb abuse or offer comfort during a crisis.
